Wine Country Information
The long warm summer days and short cool nights produce a perfect balance of sugars and acidity in grapes. This temperature variation allows the grapes to develop their flavor and complexity slowly, while retaining natural acidity. There are nearly 2,000 acres of grapes growing next to fruit orchards and wheat fields. The valley straddles the line between Burgundy and Bordeaux regions of France. Walla Walla's position east of the Cascade mountain range limits the amount of rainfall allowing growers to control precisely the amount of water a plant receives through irrigation. This makes the appellation ideal for growing grapes. Unique soil delivered by a series of tremendous floods thousands of years ago offers the perfect drainage. In 1977, the first present-day winery was established. In 1984 the Walla Walla valley was recognized as a unique American Viticultural Area. At this time there were 4 wineries, and 60 acres of vineyards. Now there are more than 100 wineries, and nearly 2,000 acres of vineyards. The region is known for its individuality and goodwill among community members. Fill your senses with the beauty of rolling waves of irrigated crops.
